Common questions

Before You Get in Touch.

Which service do I need?

Choose an independent evaluation when your AML/CTF program needs an objective test. Choose risk assessment and program support when your framework needs to be built or updated. Remediation and advisory is for evaluation findings, AUSTRAC requests and operational issues. If you are unsure, start by telling us what has happened.

How often is an independent AML/CTF evaluation required?

An independent evaluation must be conducted at least once every three years. Your AML/CTF policies must set a frequency that is suitable for the nature, size and complexity of your business. A shorter interval may be selected where the nature, size, complexity or risks of the business support it.

What is the difference between an ML/TF risk assessment and an AML/CTF program?

The risk assessment identifies and assesses the money laundering, terrorism financing and proliferation financing risks your business may face when providing designated services. Your AML/CTF program comprises that risk assessment and the policies used to manage those risks and meet your obligations.

Can the same provider build our program and evaluate it?

Only where the evaluator remains independent and objective. The evaluator should not assess work they developed, established, implemented or maintained where that involvement could affect their judgement. Independence and any conflicts should be checked before the work starts.

When should our AML/CTF program be updated?

The full risk assessment and all AML/CTF policies must be reviewed at least once every three years. Earlier review is required when services, customers, delivery channels, countries, technology or relevant AUSTRAC risk information changes, or when an independent evaluation identifies adverse findings.

What happens when an evaluation or AUSTRAC review finds problems?

The findings should be assessed, prioritised and turned into clear actions. The affected risk assessment, policies and processes should be updated, with evidence kept for the governing body, AUSTRAC and the next independent evaluation.
